As the Video Director for APACOS (Producers Association of Controlled Environment of the Sierra Region), it was my job to tell the story through motion. Myself and a team of 7 traveled to San Jose´ de las Matas, Dominican Republic in the beginning of 2017 to capture the beauty of the Sierra Region and help these local farmers collaborate to show the way they cultivate beautiful produce, and entice tourism in their area.
In 2010, a group of producers from the Sierra Region of the Dominican Republic recognized the need for collaboration. United by a deep appreciation for their homeland, the producers desired to contribute to the agricultural development of the country. They wanted to bring the products of their regions to external markets, but needed to establish a secure chain of production ensuring quality while remaining environmentally safe. What started as a discussion among colleagues eventually grew into the creation of the Producers Association of Controlled Environment of the Sierra Region, better known as APACOS.
Aiming to export products with safety, quality and efficiency, APACOS caters to the unique climactic conditions of the mountainous Sierra Region by utilizing environmentally safe agricultural techniques. Since its founding, the organization has grown to include members from four municipalities in the Sierra Region, and it continues to cultivate relationships with new producers. APACOS hopes that the beauty and uniqueness of their region’s culture will be shared with the world through the secure and efficient exportation of their products.

The Sierra Region offers a wide variety of products, from delicious fruits and vegetables to flavorful coffee beans and high quality wood. APACOS aims to increase the quality of the chain of production by considering the needs of both the consumer and the producer. The unique topography of the region and high ozone levels offer optimum conditions for agricultural production, making the region rich with the opportunity for growth. APACOS believes it is important to maintain the environmentally safe methods that are used in its production process as the association grows. Find out more about the products of APACOS, and how the harvesting, processing and packaging of each product upholds the vision and mission of the producers.

Behind the Scenes + Lessons Learned
Our team was very thankful to be apart of such an amazing experience. Our senses were heightened in the Dominican Republic. I took the opportunity while I was not filming to take some photographs of our ten day journey before returning to the studio for a rigorous ten day schedule of translating, editing and production.
This project helped me become well rehearsed in shooting video in the field, understanding my surroundings, and learning about a new culture. My military background peaked from my experience working with interpreters in Japan + Afghanistan, which helped me efficiently translate the videos when we returned to the studio to piece everything together. This was truly an experience I will never forget.
